Interpretation of Tongues and Prophecy in 1 Corinthians 12-14: with a Pentecostal Hermeneutics

Bringing “spiritual experience” into the domain of biblical hermeneutics, this book will stimulate debates within this field, among both Pentecostals and other traditions. The author also applies a Pentecostal hermeneutical methodology to Paul’s teaching on tongues and prophecy in 1 Cor 12–14, opening possibilities to a Pentecostal pneumatology that tends to focus on the Lukan narrative. Paul’s texts are reconsidered not as doctrinal or situational documents but as dynamic communication within a living community.
Ahn explains the vital role of experience in our interpretation of scripture, but she also does more. She shows us how experience actually functions in the context of 1 Corinthians 12–14 to enhance our understanding of topics like prophecy and tongues.

I am enthused about this book and I expect that it will contribute much to Pentecostal hermeneutics and theology. – Frank Macchia

This book takes another large step in Pentecostal hermeneutics through a careful exegesis of a difficult but critical passage of 1 Cor 12–14. The author engages deeply with modern scholarship, and yet is mindful of the down-to-earth everyday ‘actualising’ hermeneutical experience of the Pentecostal masses. A delightful and significant contribution to the ‘must-read’ list of Pentecostal studies. – Wonsuk Ma

All in all, this is a remarkable book, which deserves a wide readership. It is marked by good, sober, scholarship, Pentecostal conviction, and easy readability. This book will help to facilitate understanding on all sides, especially by its moderate, sane, but uncompromising standpoint. I warmly commend this book as eminently deserving a wide circulation among many readers. – Anthony C. Thiselton
